The Lower School is formed of Years 4 to 8 and is the point where most pupils begin their time at MHS. We accept pupils into any year group in the Lower School.
The Lower School is very much part of the whole school, but does have a dedicated building for Lower School pupils, Gard’ner House. This building accommodates all the youngest children for form time and the majority of their lessons. Year 8 have access to the classrooms but they are usually educated in the main body of the school. The youngest year groups also have acess to facilities throughout the school, for example they are taught in the science labs and schools of engineering and music.
The curriculum is matched to our pupils needs focussing on strengths as well as difficulties. Departments write schemes of work, that may have their roots in the national curriuclum but that are designed to motivate, inspire and challenge our pupils giving them a sense of purpose and an opportunity to succeed. In addition to the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, the syllabus covers Art, Music, Drama, Design and Technology, ICT, Spanish, Religious Studies, Humanities and PE.
Teaching and boarding staff run a wide range of activities that are offered as after-school clubs, these help boys to broaden their experiences and develop new interests and friendship groups.
The Lower School is fully committed to nurturing each pupil’s wellbeing. We aim to build self-confidence and self discipline, and encourage pupils to be creative thinkers and problems solvers who have good a good work ethic and are ready by the end of Year 8 to manage successfully the move into senior school.
