Sixth Form Extra-Curricular

A Sixth Form without a lively and dynamic extra-curricular programme would be a two-dimensional thing indeed. At More House, we are always looking for opportunities to expand our offer and respond to student interest.

Sitting alongside well-established favourites like our (in)famous black tie dinners (our last speaker told us more than we wished to know about something called 'penetration testing'), end of term hog-roasts, Winter Wonderland visits to skate on thin ice with the ladies of Alton School and a growing calendar of external sporting fixtures, we offer an event-packed activities' week each year at the end of the Trinity (summer) term during which paintballs can be expertly aimed, bowling balls can be eccentrically deployed and pleasant countryside rambles lead inexorably to 'The Barley Mow' for a pub lunch.

Most 'Flexi-Fridays' will see some contribution to our 'Renaissance Programme' - our name for a scheme to bring a broader cultural awareness to all our students. In the past, we've been joined by RNLI speakers, representatives from the Humanist Society and a passionate speaker from 'Compassion in World Farming'. Every year, the Year Twelve students thinking about learning to drive attend the “Safe Drive, Stay Alive” road safety initiative. Those Sixth Formers looking to pursue a higher education route attend our local UCAS Conventions, returning to More House heavily ladened with carrier bags crammed with prospectuses.

Our McMillan Coffee morning this year raised a tidy sum and proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that the Sixth Form is packed full of enthusiastic master-bakers. The School Tuck Shop, open during lunch breaks, is expertly run by Sixth Formers, serving the whole MHS community; on a hot summer’s afternoon, staff and students resort to the cooling influence of a chilled sugar free drink or a frozen ice pop!  More House Sixth Formers participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme (several are 'going for Gold') and have proved their mettle on several 'World Challenge' expeditions.

For many, the twin highlights of our extra-curricular programme are the 'Bushcraft' teamwork and bonding residential at the start of Year Twelve and the Year Thirteen Paris Trip. If you doubt our commitment to offering a diversity of experiences during your time with us, just think: your Sixth Form journey could start with you building your own shelters on a driesh September evening before tucking into fish eyeballs, and end in a classy Montmartre restaurant, a stroll along the Seine and an edgily educational quickstep through Pigalle and past the Moulin Rouge.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of our 'Custodian'- the ever cheerful, ever efficient Mr Rashleigh - our programme of activities is always being added to and refined. Perhaps you can offer up a suggestion or two when you join us?
