Duke of Edinburgh's Awards Scheme
What is Duke of Edinburgh's Award?
“My DofE has made me realise I can be whoever
I want to be.” Jay, Gold Award holder
Like Jay, many young people find achieving a DofE Award life-changing. A fun adventure and major challenge, three progressive Award levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) and a wide range of activities offer endless possibilities to anyone aged 14 to 24. Millions of young people in the UK have already taken part in the world’s leading youth achievement award – pushing personal boundaries, gaining new skills and enhancing their CVs and university applications. Time to get involved and go the extra mile?
Why should I do the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
Good question! Because, from the first day to the last it’s a real adventure. Every section gives you something different – that’s the fun of it!
You’ll enjoy loads of new experiences, discover talents you never thought you had, challenge yourself and meet loads of people just like you. Plus you’ll do things you love and get a kick out of. It’s a real buzz!
Then there’s all the other stuff…
…achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and a view on life that everyone is looking for, from employers to colleges and universities.
…you’re getting recognised for doing things you want to do (and may even be doing already).
…you’ll make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime.
And above all, it’s a great laugh – the question should really be why wouldn’t you bother!
Beyond your academic achievements, universities want to see evidence of so called ‘soft skills’ that you have developed through extra-curricular activities, such as communication, commitment, leadership and team work. Your DofE Award is a fantastic way to demonstrate and evidence these skills in practice, so make sure you include your DofE Awards in your personal statement.
What are the benefits of the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme?
“I previously had no idea what I wanted to do but working towards my DofE made me realise the career path I wanted to pursue and I am now studying towards becoming a qualified youth worker. DofE saved my future as I still wouldn’t know what I want to do. It got me out of the house, gave me confidence and developed my life skills. My life has been completely shaped as a result of participating in my DofE.”
Kyle Kinsella, Bronze and Silver Award holder
The DofE gives you the chance to do something completely new and improve on things you’re already doing. It takes you out of your comfort zone and into a place where you’ll push yourself and have amazing new experiences. You’ll build confidence, resilience, skills for work and friendship groups. And you’ll have a brilliant time doing it.
Looking forward, the DofE can help you to carve out a better future. Colleges, universities and employers regard a DofE Award highly so it will help to open the right doors for you. If you’re keen to get off the sofa and put 100% into something that could change your life, the DofE is for you.
